A passenger's medical needs and claim are separate from vehicle repairs and the driver's own losses. Start with the vehicle, driver, trip and insurance details you have. You can request a consultation even when the driver is a friend or family member.

## Identify the vehicle and your role

Tell the team whether you were in a private car, motorcycle, Uber or Lyft. Provide the owner and driver details, trip receipt if relevant, and the location and date of the accident.

Save the report number and insurer communications. Different vehicles and circumstances can change which coverage is relevant; a passenger should not assume the driver's description answers every question.

## Keep your claim distinct from other occupants

Your injuries, medical history and lost income need their own documentation. Several injured occupants may be considering claims under the same policy, which can raise limits and competing-interest questions.

Do not assume every occupant should have the same lawyer or sign the same release. A driver's property settlement does not automatically establish the terms of an individual passenger's injury claim.

## Organize treatment and coverage records

Keep bills, appointment dates, payment explanations and work restrictions. Utah PIP rules may apply to covered occupants, while motorcycles and other circumstances require special attention.

Review the policy and written benefit decisions. A medical payment does not necessarily resolve all injury losses, and an offer should be checked for the scope of claims it releases.

## Discuss family concerns and authority to act

Tell us if the driver is a relative or friend and explain your concerns about the process. An insurance review and a filed lawsuit are different steps; consultation does not mean every matter will go to trial.

If the passenger is a minor or cannot manage the matter, explain who is seeking help and their authority. Do not sign another person's release without appropriate legal authority and review.

## Frequently asked questions

### Can I consult if a family member was driving?

Yes. Explain the relationship and circumstances. Responsibility, coverage and any potential conflicts can be evaluated individually.

### Does the driver's settlement settle my case?

Not necessarily. The actual release, who signed it and their authority matter. Bring the documents instead of assuming your claim has ended.
