Personal injury protection, often called PIP, can be one part of handling accident-related expenses. It is not the same as the total value of an injury case. Coverage, eligible people, expenses and other policy terms must be reviewed for your situation.

## What the basic medical benefit means

Utah law provides a minimum of $3,000 in covered necessary medical expenses under the applicable PIP requirements. A policy may provide more, and other PIP benefits have their own conditions.

The minimum is not an automatic check to every accident victim. Payment depends on covered expenses and eligibility, and the amount does not establish the value of a liability claim.

## Check who and what the policy covers

Coverage may concern qualifying vehicle occupants and certain pedestrians. Policy and statutory definitions matter, including exceptions for motorcycles and questions involving out-of-state policies.

Bring declarations, endorsements and benefit decisions. Tell the team whether you were driving, riding or walking, and identify the vehicle and any other relevant coverage.

## Organize bills and benefit statements

Keep provider bills, receipts, explanations of benefits and the insurer's payment history. Confirm the correct claim number with each relevant provider and retain copies of submitted records.

Separate what was billed, paid, denied or still outstanding. This makes it easier to identify duplicate requests or a balance that has not been addressed.

## Ask what happens when benefits are disputed or exhausted

Request the written reason for a denial and the available payment or limit information. Reaching a limit raises a different issue from whether an expense is covered.

Other insurance or a liability claim may require review, but further payment is not guaranteed. Do not ignore bills or sign an unfamiliar repayment agreement without understanding it.

## Do not confuse PIP with general damages

Utah law has separate requirements affecting certain general damages in motor vehicle injury claims. The basic PIP medical limit is not a universal pain-and-suffering calculation.

Bring medical records, payment decisions and the accident timeline to your consultation. Review the entire claim before concluding that a PIP payment settles every loss.

## Frequently asked questions

### Does no-fault mean everyone receives benefits?

No. PIP can apply without resolving fault, but eligibility, covered expenses and policy rules still matter.

### Is $3,000 the most my accident case can be worth?

No. That figure concerns a basic covered medical benefit, not the overall value of every injury claim. Other losses and legal requirements need separate evaluation.
