Stay safe and report the incident
Do not chase a vehicle or put yourself back in traffic to collect evidence. Contact emergency services when needed and report the incident to the appropriate agency.
Record the time, place, vehicle description, partial plate and direction of travel if you can do so safely. Describe uncertainty honestly instead of filling in missing details.
Preserve independent evidence
Keep witness names, report information and original photographs. Identify nearby cameras promptly; footage may not remain available indefinitely.
Claims involving an unidentified vehicle can raise particular proof requirements under Utah law and the policy. The absence or presence of physical contact should not be treated as an automatic answer without legal and coverage review.
Notify your insurer and track each coverage
Ask about applicable notice requirements and obtain a claim number. PIP, uninsured motorist and collision coverage concern different losses and may have different conditions.
Keep written decisions and requests for information. A police report and a claim confirmation are important records, but neither alone guarantees that an insurer will pay.
Update the file if the driver is identified
Pass new information to the appropriate investigator and insurer, keeping copies. Identification may change the available claim paths, but it does not remove the need to prove responsibility and losses.
